Advice on How to Propose!
Proposal ideas and advice on how to pop the question..
It's a minefield of potential schmaltz and disappointment, but, for every bloke
who's wondered "how the hell do I pull this one off?", we offer our humble
two-penneth on posing the most romantic question of them all.
Put Some Effort Into It
Presuming that you're going to look for a more romantic method than a
post-coital "so I suppose we should get married" as you search for the TV
remote, this is the first thing that everyone will ask about - particularly on
her side of the fence - when news of the impending nuptials hits the grapevine.
Contrary to what Hollywood may say, you don't have to qualify your love for her
by being in a Venetian gondola with The Righteous Brothers serenading from an
overlooking bridge, whilst, simultaneously, a single white dove takes her
eyeline to a low-flying passenger plane with a trailing neon-lit banner that
asks your lady to make you "the happiest man on earth" just as £3,000 worth of
fireworks bursts the night sky..
In fact, most women we know would push you overboard if confronted by such
treacle-laden guff.
It's never too early to start planning your stag weekend.
Once she says yes, get your best man to give us a call!
Be Traditional.. But Unique (!)
The trick is to create a moment that is in keeping with your relationship. Doing
what seems natural with the resources that you have, while at the same time
doing something original that will make her smile 10 or 20 years from now when
she's recounting the episode to friends or relatives. Like the wedding itself,
too much planning could make a proposal seem awkward. Not enough thought can
take the edge off what most females view as a litmus test of their man's true
character... and you do want a positive answer to the question, when all's said
and done, so get your thinking cap on if you want to do this properly! Some of
you will want to see her father before you pop the question, and others will
see your partner's parents for a blessing of the union after you've made sure
that she wants you first.. Either way is okay, so long as you do whatever is
natural for both you and the family, who are, after all, set to "lose" their
daughter to your not-so-evil clutches.
If You're Gonna Do It, Do It Right
You'll need to have a ring with you when the moment comes, of course, so there's
another bit of preparation for you to consider, but don't be alarmed if the
ring you select doesn't fit first time. It's better to get a size that's just a
fraction too large than too small, and a lot of blokes will make this easier by
turning cleptomaniac one weekend and grabbing a ring from their woman's draw or
jewellery box while she's in the bath. But the ring is no more important than
either the setting or the sincerity behind your words, so whether you ask her
via the scoreboard at Anfield during half-time, live on a Trisha "Valentine's
Special", under the stars in the Australian outback, mid-way through a tandem
skydive, sat outside a beer tent at T in the Park, huddled together under a
tree during a thunderstorm or by getting Aerosmith to pose as a Barbershop
Quartet.. we sincerely wish you both good luck and a positive response!
