A sunset in Lloret de Mar is truly a sight to behold. With its chimney reds and Halloween oranges, the skyline is enough to almost bring tears to the eyes of Dona Marinera, the fisherman’s wife whose bronze statue overlooks the bay. The only pity is that, by the time the sunset’s startling beauty unfolds of an evening, most of those viewing it are well on the way to cloud cuckoo land, mainly on account of the frequency of happy hours, the potency of cocktails and the natural headrush that ensues when you’ve worshipped the sun all day and are out to do your best mate proud on a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Yes indeed, hen nights are made for palm tree-encrusted, lagoon-laden, bar-brimming hotspots like Lloret de Mar.
Saint Joan’s Castle, along with her medieval fort, borders the town. It is rumoured that the good lady walks across the mountains to complain about the noise from time to time when incensed by the latest deluge of thrill-seekers, clubbers and assorted party-lovers, though LNOF cannot personally confirm any such sighting to date.
