2005’s Capital City of Culture continues to cement its reputation as a strong rival to Dublin for the Irish stag night vote. The delightful harbour has seen its fair share of Viking longboats in the past, being a major trade centre at one time, so it seems only fitting that today’s numerous cheap air connections have brought things full circle, allowing a whole new generation of hairy-arsed foreign invaders to drop their anchors on Cork’s shores. Add to that a love of hurling – something that usually plays a part in every stag night – and you begin to see the unique pedigree of Ireland’s second city when it comes to hosting pre-wedding bashes...

A large student population always stokes the fires of a city’s nightlife, and Cork is no different in that respect. Cosmopolitan clubs, bars bursting with character and restaurants with imagination and knowhow await your arrival, though as always it’s the sensible thing to check with us first before you end up lost in Fitzgerald Park with the boys muttering under their breath that someone else should have organised things. The locals have a phrase about the need for common sense in knowing where you’re going before you set out.
