The History of Newcastle upon Tyne

From shipbuilding and Shearer to coalmining and Viz, Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s proud history reflects a North-Eastern hotbed of humour, industry, endeavour and sporting prowess. Now one of the most popular party cities in the UK, Tyneside has both the timeless landmarks and quality of nightlife to satisfy not only culture vultures but those in search of a handful of hedonism. Even if you’re a gent who’s solely in the second category, it couldn’t possibly do any harm to paint in a little more black & white background before you grab that inflatable sheep and board the train for a stag weekend in Newcastle...

The image of Newcastle folk – straight-talking, welcoming and up for a night out no matter what the circumstances – comes from a working history of unflinchingly hard graft, where long hours and cold weather helped fuel a type of gallows humour and defiant party spirit in those who dug coal or built ships. Plus, if you’re a region whose men can forever boast about numerous massive erections (the Tyne Bridge being the primary example) and genial inventions (Stephenson’s Rocket, etc), it’s hardly surprising that a resonating feelgood factor will be passed on to future generations.

Population: Approx. 260000

Prior to the industrial revolution (when Ant & Dec were just starting out) the area saw off poncey landlords from Rome who just couldn’t contain the indomitable Geordie spirit for long. They may have conquered the known world up to that point, but after spending a few nights in Newcastle, on the lash with the good folk of Tyneside they decided that this was as far as they wanted to go thank you very much. God knows how much colder it would get further North, they feared, so out came the bricks and up went the wall. Yes, the Romans supervised it. But Newcastle’s renowned craftsmen applied much of the sweat.

In recent times the city has acquired a chic streak to enhance its image yet further, a series of artistic creations - such as the Sage building and the Millennium Bridge - adding to the splendour of a stroll along the Quayside, and with the number of famous people from the area at seemingly an all time high... there has never been a better time to tap into the Toon boom.
