This magnificent cauldron of vivacity and colour is unquestionably one of Europe's greatest cities. Whether you select it as the base for your hen weekend celebrations might depend on factors like air fares or the whims of your chosen guests, but, believe us, there are nothing but plusses for choosing this cosmopolitan cracker of a place, and we aren’t happy at the notion of the hen taking second best. With outrageous culture on every street corner, brilliant Barcelona is brimming with provocative flair and artistic flourish. Don't doubt for a second that you're in the heart of a major player in European art, cuisine, shopping and nightlife. The skyline is peppered with masterpieces that demand your attention, whilst the smells wafting past you on La Rambla or Placa de Catalunya are nothing short of divine. In fact, it's difficult to walk more than 5 minutes in any direction without standing gob-smacked before a tower or cathedral, drawn in by a sexy store window or suddenly compelled to order some food. The markets, the museums, the street life and the landmarks… If you’ve never been before, you’re going to love it. If you have, you’re going to love it again.

With dinner not served until at least 10.30pm - at which point the cava and salsa come out to play - you can only begin to imagine the differences between here and the UK when it comes to how people socialise. Your average taverna wont peak until 2 or 3am and the clubs not until dawn. If anyone comes back from Barcelona and tells you "it couldn't keep up with me", you look them straight in the eye and tell them that they're lying.
