Edinburgh is home to amazing views, gorgeous food (and a couple of hot blokes in kilts), so it’s easy to see why this medieval city has become one of the most popular locations in the UK to host a hen do. From hiking Arthur’s Seat to take in the beautiful cityscape, to shopping and cocktails on George Street, the Scottish capital has something for everyone.

Best Edinburgh Nightlife Areas for a Hen Do

Edinburgh is rich in history, culture and gorgeous cocktail bars. With beautiful views and a stunning skyline, it’s no wonder this city is deemed magical by some – especially Harry Potter fans. As Queen Victoria once described, it is “a city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again”. Hey, if it’s good enough for a Queen, then it must be alright.

    • Charming,
    • Old fashioned,
    • Iconic

    Edinburgh Old Town

The medieval Old Town is a beautiful part of the city and has a magical quality to its charm, well, it is where the Harry Potter books were written. This ancient part of Edinburgh is perfect for exploring during the day, but really comes alive at night. Bars like Cabaret Voltaire, located deep beneath the cobbled streets, will keep you dancing to the early hours of the morning. You could even head up to the castle to watch the sunrise afterwards.

    • Buzzing,
    • Trendy,
    • Modern

    Edinburgh New Town

The elegant New Town is home to world class shopping, cocktail bars and sleek hotels. Princes Street has all the high street favourites like Zara and River Island, as well as a very good Primark. If you’re looking for more high-end, head over to George Street where you’ll find big brands such as Jo Malone, as well as some gorgeous cocktail bars – we suggest the swanky Tigerlily for the indulgent ‘Crystal Bee’ cocktail, made with actual gold!

    • Fun,
    • Vibrant,

    Southside

The Southside is not something from a musical, it’s a lively cosmopolitan area just south of the city’s Old Town. Home to a lot of Edinburgh’s student population, Southside is a great place for lively bars, reasonably priced restaurants and some more cultural things to do, like the National Museum of Scotland. If you’re planning a daytime bar crawl for you and your hens, then make sure you head to the Pear Tree House, where you’ll find a HUGE beer garden – perfect for a Kopparberg or two.

    • Traditional,
    • Old School,
    • Iconic

    Haymarket

Haymarket is home to some of Edinburgh’s more traditional style pubs and is the best place to head to if you’re looking for that authentic Scottish welcome. Just across the station at Haymarket, you’ll find Ryrie’s Bar; a truly traditional Scottish pub described as a “wee gem”. Polished wooden panelling, coupled with tartan chairs and the smell of whisky in the air will leave you saying “Och aye the noo” before you know it.
