Best Newcastle Nightlife Areas for a Hen Do

Overflowing with lively, idiosyncratic nightlife zones, fabulous shopping thoroughfares and more booze than you can shake a stick at - Newcastle is a hen party all-rounder. Widespread, yet totally walkable, Newcastle’s nightlife is broken up into several different zones, each with their own unique charm. From Geordie Shore’s renowned Diamond Strip, to the happy hour haven of Jesmond, to the rough and ready Bigg Market – Newcastle nightlife is a hen party playground.

  • Quayside

The Quayside, which has Newcastle on one side and Gateshead on the other, is the ultimate place to go for a classy night out. The seven iconic bridges of Newcastle are intertwined with fab waterside bars, such as Pitcher and Piano and Slug & Lettuce. At night it comes to life with lights from the bridges and the Sage dancing dreamily in the water – It’s 100 % instagrammable! The Quayside has recently become known as a celebrity hangout, with everyone from Gordon Ramsey to Harrison Ford dining there, just think you could be Hendiana Jones and the Last Night of Freedom... Get us to a temple of booze!

  • Grey/Dean Street

Grey Street starts at Grey’s Monument and morphs into Dean Street, which winds its way down to the quayside. These two lively streets are hubs of activity at all times of the day, all year round - transforming from a shopper's paradise, to a lively nightlife thoroughfare as soon as dusk falls. Grey Street was named as one of the most instagrammed streets in the UK, with its gorgeous Georgian architecture. These streets are lined with some of Newcastle’s hottest bars such as The Muddler (pan Asian food and amazing cocktails), Four Quarters (a fun arcade themed bar) and Decantus (for the gin lovers!).

  • Diamond Strip

Synonymous with the Geordie Shore lot, the Diamond Strip is one of the most popular nightlife stretches in The Toon. Having hosted many an A-lister's night out - Ed Sheeran, Kanye West, Drake and Snoop Dog to name but a few - it's the top place to celeb spot. Whether you want to jump into a ball pool at Howlers, have a head spinning night getting canny mortal at Revolution or get funky at Flares, the cheesiest retro club you’ll ever go to, we are sure you’ll make “precious” memories!

  • Bigg Market

Bursting with heaving, hen-heavy haunts, enticing cocktail offers and a raucous atmosphere ‘til the early hours – any hen party here is going to be a Bigg one. Enjoy a little German culture (and a tonne of beers!) at the Stein Bier Keller or live it up like a pop princess at Popworld. There's even the WC Gincloset, which actually used to be an underground set of toilets, don’t let the name put you off, it’s now a super swanky bar. If all that partying makes you hungry you can pop across the road to the 24-hour Greggs, yes 24-hour, how’s that for Geordie?!

  • Jesmond

Set a little out of town, but well worth a visit (a good option for a lazy Sunday), Jesmond is a super trendy and leafy suburb bursting with restaurants, bars and boutique shops. Jesmond’s 'main strip', Osborne Road, has back-to-back bustling bars with electric atmospheres. It’s an affluent area, but it’s great if you’re on a budget because of the ton of happy hours you’ll discover, including the opportunity to 'push the button' at Spy bar and get your round for free - meaning that hen party kitty will stretch much further than you think.

The stunning glass ceiling is just magical. There’s even a fully sized tree growing out of the middle of the bar – how’s that for quirky? Theatre Royal

100 Grey St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6BR
    Visit Website

Nothing screams ‘culture vulture’ like an awfully refined night in a 19th century theatre. With everything from musicals, pantomimes and comedies, to high-brow Shakespearean plays on offer, The Theatre Royal is the biggest theatre and grandest theatre in the city. Many of London’s hottest shows eventually make their way here such as Les Misérables, Mamma Mia and even SpongeBob the musical! Situated on Grey Street (that’s not the last you’ve heard of him) and well within walking distance of all main nightlife areas and transportation hubs, if you’re after a night at the theatre, there’s no better, or grander way to spend your evening. With palatial interiors and a deceptive capacity of 1,249 seats across four levels, it’s worth having a look into the auditorium, even if you’re just passing through the day.

    Grainger Market

Grainger St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5QQ
    Visit Website

Nestled in the centre of Newcastle, the Grade I listed, dome-covered building of Grainger Market is a slice of Newcastle history. First built in the 1830s, this was the largest of its kind and even housed Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar, the world’s smallest M&S. Now, you can get everything from clothing and footwear to devilish cupcakes and coffee shops in Grainger Market. It has recently developed into a foodie’s heaven, with delights such as Redhead’s Mac ‘N’ Cheese (with sticky rib Mac and Cheese which is to die for), SnackWallah (which does amazing vegetarian Indian food) and Pumphrey’s Coffee (which is THE place to go for a coffee whilst in town). It’s also been the set of many TV shows and films in its time, as well as a bomb shelter in WWII. For retail therapy with a local twist, it’s all about Grainger Market.

    Grey’s Monument

150 Grainger St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5AF

There’s only one Mr Grey you’ll need on your Newcastle hen weekend… Slap-bang in the centre of town, it’s a Grade I listed monument, a central meeting point, a metro stop and a guardian watching down over the bar-lined Grey Street. Towering over the city at 40 metres tall, if Grey’s could talk (and, y’know, wasn’t made of stone), he’d sure have some stories to tell. Only those in the know realise that you can actually climb the spiral staircase and get 360 degree views over your host city.

Osborne Road is just a stone’s throw away, should you fancy something a little stronger. There’s even a pets’ corner on certain days of the month – nothing cures a hangover more than cute animals.

    Bigg Market

Bigg Market, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1UN

Famous not only for its cheap, cheerful and more than a little bit rowdy nightlife scene, Bigg Market is the site of Newcastle’s former zoo - not much has changed there then… Dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was the site of a thriving marketplace, Bigg Market is named after a course type of barley known as Bigg barley, which was sold from the stalls. Bigg Market has recently had a huge revamp with a ton of new bars that have opened. It still has a bustling party vibe, with cheesy delights such as Popworld and Cosy Joes (karaoke heaven), but it is also home to some classy bars such as Revolucion de Cuba and WC- Gin Closet. The good thing about ticking this historical site, is that you can neck a few shots along the way. It’s a win-win.

Staying Safe in Newcastle

Yes, Newcastle is chocka of friendly Geordies, but at the end of the day it's a city, so we'd recommend following some basic safety tips. Here are our top six safety tips:

1

Make sure there are two of you together at all times so no one is wandering around on their own

2

Set up a group chat for the hen and put the accommodation address in it so you've all got easy access to it

3

Take care not to put your drinks down to reduce the risk of spiking

4

Keep to the main areas of Newcastle rather than venturing into neighbourhoods you don't know

5

Be vigilant of pickpockets and don't put your valuables anywhere thieves can easily access them

6

If you're heading to the quayside be mindful around water when intoxicated

By following these simple safety tips, we're sure you'll have a first class trip to the toon.
