Edinburgh is in our top 10 destinations for both stags and hens….. it’s also just an hour and a half from our HQ, so it would be rude not to go for a wee day trip. Och aye!

Have a look at what we got up to on our grand day oot in Edinburgh!

08:30am - Travelling to Edinburgh

The start of the day saw us boarding the train at Newcastle (where our company is based). Being a Last Night of Freedom day out, obviously some of us cracked open a couple of tins to start the day. Hey, it’s five o’clock somewhere right?! The journey from Newcastle is just an hour and a half, which absolutely flies if you’re chatting. The train tickets were really reasonable, and it left some of us wondering why we don’t go to Edinburgh more often because it’s super convenient to get to and doesn’t cost the earth. The journey over in a flash, we headed out of the train station to the pulsating sound of bagpipes... We had arrived in Scotland. .

11am - Backstabber Village

The first activity on the agenda was , which was held at the stunning Tigerlily bar. This is basically like The Traitors but on a smaller scale. Claudia Winkelman was not hosting us this time, but it didn’t matter because our host Kate was lovely, funny and equipped with a Home Bargain’s tote bag of prizes. We were all told we would be given roles secretly, these were villagers, the inspector (who once a game can reveal someone else’s role), the shield (who can protect someone from murder once a game) and of course…. The backstabbers!

Each round the backstabbers would “murder” one of the villagers. It was up to the villagers to work out who the backstabbers were. Basically, the villagers needed to banish the backstabbers before all the villagers got murdered. In between the murders and the banishments, we played games to win prizes. 13:15pm - The Scotch Whisky Experience

Next up was – a sensory journey into the world of whisky found on the Royal Mile. This activity saw us heading through a series of engaging rooms including one where you learnt how whisky was made and one where you were in a whisky barrel simulator - as our host said…barrels of fun! Another room saw us being taught about what makes Scottish whisky…. Scottish whisky. We were introduced to all five Scottish locations where whisky is made. We were given a scratch and sniff card so we could smell different types of whisky from different regions. These had different smells from smokey to citrusy.

Then we were led into a grand-looking room and asked to pick out which flavour whisky we’d like to try. You could choose a single malt or a blended Scotch whisky. I chose the smokey one (oh boy, was it smokey!). Read about the full experience: LNOF Try The Scotch Whisky Experience.

2pm - Free Time (Day drinking!)

2pm saw us enjoy some free time. This was supposed to be a bar crawl, but the weather was so lovely that we just wanted to hang out in a beer garden. Our host at the whisky experience advised us that there’s not a ton of beer gardens actually *on* the Royal Mile, so we headed to the ever-popular Grassmarket where we found a nice little strip of bars with outdoor seating. We chose Maggie Dickson’s as it had lots of outdoor seating, perfect for our group of ten. We had a couple of rounds of cocktails and some chips whilst we took in our vibrant surroundings. In true Scottish fashion, there was an Irn-Bru cocktail, but no one went for it, so that remains a mystery. We couldn’t sit around in a beer garden all day; we still had activities to test!

16:30pm - Boom Battle Bar

It was time for Boom Battle Bar. Boom Battle Bar is a UK wide bar that’s full of games, often consisting of things like crazy golf, e-darts, shuffleboard, karaoke and more. Today we were going to test Crazier Golf and E-Darts, as well as tuck into a buffet.

First up was Crazier Golf. Forget your average game of crazy golf, this had all kinds of stuff going on. There was a hole where you needed to use a baseball bat to hit the ball into the hole. As well as this there was a hole where you had to use a catapult to get the ball in the hole… every hole brought a new surprise. The important thing though is that I won.

Before we played , we enjoyed a fab hot buffet consisting of things like chicken wings, carbonara bites, battered prawns, cauliflower bites, fries, sweet potato fries and more! Scran scranned, it was time for darts. Augmented reality darts, which just means that the board adds us the scores for you and you play a series of mini games rather than traditional games. 19:30pm - Home Time

And then it was time to go home, which meant heading to M & S for more tinnies for the journey. We’d all had a fab day. The one thing that struck me is that with Edinburgh, there’s always something going on… guided tours, street performance, stags & hens… it has a great lively vibe to it. The only thing is there are a lot of steps, so make sure you pack some comfy shoes for any daytime activities!
