The Temple Bar sits pretty (and green) as the country’s biggest and loudest nightlife area – packed full of Dublin’s oldest and liveliest pubs. There’s a few of them, as this city lays claim to more than 770 pubs… The boozers lining the main strip of the Temple Bar, as well as the side streets winding off, have been around since time itself (probably as old as your Dad), with one even starting life in the early 12th century.

The Temple Bar is, arguably, the most popular tourist attraction in Dublin, and the top destination for your Irish stag weekend. Each pub boasts another stream of venues next door - you need not walk more than 10 yards for your next Guinness. Be warned, you’ll pass thousands of tourists on your way… it’s busy day and night.

No stag do in Dublin is complete without a trip to the bustling Temple Bar. Whatever time you turn up, we can guarantee live music, craic and beer. That said, this district is known for putting their pint prices up on the hour, every evening, so watch out for the tourist trap…

01. The Temple Bar

No stag do worth its salt visits the Temple Bar, without drinking in The Temple Bar. The iconic red corner pub is as much of a landmark as its namesake. If the colour doesn’t give it away, the crowd of tourists around the front door will. This place sees heavy footfall no matter the time and you’re in the wrong place to avoid the tourists, but well within the thick of Dublin’s finest action. The atmosphere is buzzing, bouncing, busy, loud and boasts traditional live music each day, starting from noon and going ‘til late. Running alongside that, you’ve got some of the best pints of Guinness in Dublin and the likes of Coddle Stew to soak it all up. Add to that mighty craic, and this is your first stag do stop.

02. The Auld Dubliner

The Auld Dubliner is still young at heart. It might be traditional and old-school inside, but the crowd is a mixed bag – along with the live music. Less than one minute from The Temple Bar pub, this bright red venue is another ‘Big Lad’ in the street. It’s just as busy and you’ll be elbow dodging with the tourists, but the live music, whiskey and Guinness are well worth it. The pints are even relatively cheap, but be warned about upping the price as the night goes on. It’s one of our favourites in the Temple Bar, so much so that a few of us from LNOF spent the night there on our recent trip to Dublin. We just can’t remember the end of the night…

03. Oliver St John Gogarty's

Oliver is the type of lad you want on your stag do. It’s the backdrop to many Irish weekends as well as the loud neighbour of The Auld Dubliner. Decked out in bright green, it’s synonymous with Ireland. It couldn’t be more Irish if it had leprechauns by the bar and a pot of gold at the door. The late 19th century bar is just as busy as its brothers and has seen about every kind of tourist (and local) you can imagine. Spanning two lively floors, with an award-winning restaurant serving up Irish classics on the ground, there’s plenty of room for even the larger groups. More Irish than Robbie Keane, Oliver’s also offers a massive selection of rare whiskies and face painting on a weekend to get that stag primped and preened.

04. Tapped Dublin

Formally known at Porterhouse, this venue re-opened as Tapped in 2022.Tapped specialises in local and international craft beer. You can (obviously!) get beer on tap with fun options such as Of Foam and Fury and Hallo Ich Bin Blueberry (exotic!), plus many more from their extensive beer list. You can also get organic and sustainable wine and premium cocktails on tap with all the classics available such as Espresso Martinis and Margaritas. Tapped is known to host Live music and have DJs playing till late. They’re partnered up with Dublin Pizza company, so it’s also a great place to get a bite to eat. Grab a booth and settle in with a cool crisp beer, this bar is sure to come out on tap!

05. Buskers on the Ball

Buskers on the Ball is our favourite stag do sports bar in Dublin, and a landmark in the Temple Bar. Located underneath the already world-famous Buskers Bar, the ‘on the Ball’ venue is dedicated to all things sports; basically, a man cave. There are no less than five ping pong tables, six pool tables – including one American table – two shuffle board tables and two foosball tables. Along with all of these tables, you can book a hot ref to oversee your pool game and keep the players in check… The bar has a capacity for 900, often filling that on a weekend or a big event – especially with one of the largest projector screens in Dublin and Desperados on tap.

06. Bad Bobs

Bob is one of the lads; a five-floor beast. The award-winning hybrid of bar/restaurant and club is iconic, packed full of huge groups, locals, tourists, buskers, cats, dogs… Beginning at the top (start as you mean to go on), this floor is the venue’s ‘rooftop’ bar with a retractable roof. Moving down the building, you’ve got several bars, VIP areas, a dance floor and a whole load of space to experience that famous Irish nightlife. The ground floor is the main bar and restaurant, and where you’ll spend most of your time. The buskers are immense, the food even better and the pints bigger. Bob will see your stag weekend right. We had a cracking time when we visited.

07. The Brazen Head

35-37 Essex St E, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Step back in time in Ireland’s oldest pub, one with its own Wikipedia page. The Brazen Head is steeped in history and is the original on the Temple Bar, serving pints for merry men since 1198. It doesn’t get more authentic than this, attracting tourists and locals for centuries. It’s another one you’ll have to arrive early, but the Guinness will make up for that in no time. The unique, castle-esque pub is decked out like a museum and is a great place to grab a drink (the finest Guinness is offered here) and bite to eat. It’s also one of Dublin’s best live music venues, with buskers on each night.

08. Foggy Dew

The Foggy Dew is one of those rare breeds of Temple Bar venues; one that often boasts more Dubliners than tourists. ‘The Foggy’, once known as the ‘Dodgy Few’, is part of the district’s foundations – dedicated to Ireland and the culture. By that, we mean the absolute best of Irish music, even international tunes, with buskers on most nights. Saturdays even feature the legendary Foggy Dew DJ. Established in 1901, this place is old… but in a good way. You’ve got a seriously cool atmosphere and top drinks to enjoy – get there early to get a seat in one of the popular snugs.

09. Fitzsimons Temple Bar

Fitzsimons is more club than pub and, for that reason, is seriously busy every day. Slap-bang in the heart of the Temple Bar’s action, Fitzsimons is huge – playing all major sporting events, across massive plasma TVs, along with live music, DJs and even Ceili sessions. There’s something for the stag to enjoy… The venue features bars on all four floors (less queues for that Guinness), as well as a late cocktail bar and nightclub – the list goes on. Those floors are the centre of it all, but there’s even an open-air roof terrace to spill out into and soak up that balmy Dublin weather, when your head starts to hurt…

10. Brogans

Brogans is another bar recognised for its pint of Guinness. The pub also houses the largest collection of Guinness memorabilia, outside of the brewery – it’s an authentic Dublin pub in the truest sense. This stalwart of the city is for any Dublin bucket list and is so authentic; you’d expect gold to start pouring out the taps. Irish music is at the heart of this pub, with a whopping 35 year reputation – buskers are performing most nights. Along with that, you’ve got food to help your recover/prepare you for the stag night, as well as local craft ales.
