Edinburgh is affectionately known as ‘Auld Reekie’, meaning ‘Old Smokey’ – a name given in the 17th century when the city’s fortification walls meant residents were forced to cohabit in a relatively small space, causing the smoke from chimneys (among other unpleasant things) to form a thick smog over the city. Fortunately today, the city no longer has a smog or smell problem and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world… But the name stuck.
