If you’re really wondering where to have this stag weekend, follow the example of all those Vikings and bring the party to York. The abrasive Norsemen with their silly hats knew how to sniff out a good time better than anyone - so book yourselves a longboat (alright then, minibus) and prepare to become honorary Minstermen on your stag weekend in York.
You’ll find a stunningly beautiful, compact and richly historical city, full of Roman reminders, gift shops, mouth-watering restaurants, splendidly diverse boozers, snap-worthy monuments… and American tourists. The atmosphere is warm, convivial and unforced, whilst the local populace are nicely split between older traditionalists, younger students and camera-laden visitors. There are great day and evening options in York when it comes to pre-organising an event or two, and only some of these involve the magnificent River Ouse that protectively weaves around castles, towers, museums, Inns, parks - and Dungeons. Oh, and there’s even a Viking Centre too, just in case you need to trade your horns in for a new set whilst on your York stag weekend.
My best mate's stag was in York. We dressed him as a Viking and got taken around the bars by some beer babes. We use the pictures as blackmail now, obviously.

York is not only incredibly nice to look at, it’s also outstandingly good fun to be in and well worthy of consideration for your shortlist of possible locations. If you want pub recommendations, there’s a bar for every day of the year, including the liver-banging Micklegate Run, a famous stretch of drinking establishments that may threaten early casualties if the boys haven’t first lined their stomachs in any of the great-value eateries in and around Grape Line, Stonegate, Goodramgate or Coney Street.
There are always plenty of hen groups adding to the celebratory feel along the attractive riverside area, and the nightclubs are just as heaving as the beer gardens are during early evening. You’ve also got a spectacular array of medieval masterpieces – such as the 15th century wall that runs for two miles around the centre – so there’s no chance of getting lost. York is a friendly, smart, easily-reachable sure-fire winner with a superb track record in hosting brilliant stag weekends. Maybe it’s time to get medieval on yo’ ass.
