Barcelona Craft

BUILD YOUR barcelona STAG

Cities all over the world are being swept up in the craft beer revolution, and Barcelona is no different.

The cosmopolitan districts of cultural powerhouse Barcelona have long boasted a wealth of tapas bars and tavernas amongst their historic and mesmerising architecture. Recently, as part of a broader global rise in the popularity of independent and small-batch ‘craft’ beer breweries, many bars serving these diverse and characterful beers have opened in the Catalan capital. We’ve narrowed down a great route to follow if you want to take in some of the big hitters…

Let's get started.

1. The Growler

When you just can’t get enough Growler…

If you didn’t know already, the meaning of the word growler means (no, we’re not talking about that, get your mind out of the gutter!), a jug/large bottle that can be filled with beer and large bottles of beer you shall have at this relaxed craft beer bar. This simple and chilled out bar is the perfect place to kick off your bar crawl because although it may not have all the bells and whistles of some modern bars, it does have a huge variety of craft beer, over one hundred and sixty cans to be exact.

There are also ten pumps at the bar that change every two to four weeks. The Growler has a big focus on Spanish craft beer, so this is the perfect place to get immersed in the culture. They have craft beer sets and you can even buy beer to take away in a growler if you just can’t get enough.

2. Garage Beer Co.

Carrer del Consell de Cent 261, Barcelona, 08011

Craig David’s favourite boozer

Two things point to the quality of the beer for sale at Garage Beer Co. – the row of eight taps on the sheet metal wall, and the minimalist, roughshod decor. Eight taps is significantly fewer than craft beer bars like this, instead they follow a ‘quality over quantity’ mantra, backing the brews on offer to be well chosen and exceptionally good. The surroundings are bare to say the least, but they’re confident that you’ll be so enamoured with the drink in your hand that you’re unlikely to care.

A large glass partition looks through to their brewery, where they are constantly working on new flavours and recipes, and producing delicious beers to dish out through their own pumps. You can’t get much fresher than a distance between vat and tap that’s measured in metres, not miles. The prices are reasonable and the clientele are young, and when the evening gets on and the music is turned up, it’ll be toe-tapping classic rock that you hear.

3. BierCaB

Barcelona's craft beer behemoth

If there’s a long queue for the bar when you’re in Cerveceria Biercab, it won’t be because the service is slow or the bar staff unhelpful, it will be because the folks at the front of the line are umm-ing and ahh-ing their way through 30 (yes 30) different beer taps. This dizzying line of beer levers produces every type of brew under the sun; IPAs, Double IPAs, Saisons, Red Ales, Lambics, Porters, Imperial Porters – you get the idea. There’s no incomprehensible, hand-written blackboards here either, you’ll be run through the menu by two large flat-screen TVs above the bar.

The entire venue is sleek and modern, with an impressive, artistic ceiling design consisting of hundreds of small wooden boards. The lighting and paint give the room a yellowy-orange glow not dissimilar to the beer itself, and the seating is combination of long, shared benches and high, bar-height tables. So pick your seat, pick your tap and, if you’re feeling peckish, pick something delicious from the reasonably priced and highly-rated tapas menu. None of the above will disappoint.

These guys were making craft beer before it was cool

The biggest player in the British craft beer, Aberdeen-based Brewdog has expanded its massively popular fleet of industrial-themed bars into 11 countries since opening in their hometown in 2010. The ribbon was cut on this typically-cool bar on Barcelona’s Carrer de Casanova in early 2015, and it’s established itself as one of the flagship bars in the city for getting your paws around a glass of high quality malted barley.

The bar is housed in an old bank and kept some of the bulletproof glass in the renovation – just for that extra piece of mind. Half of the walls are exposed brick and the other are covered in hand-painted murals, lending the edgy, urban vibe that Brewdog have made their own. Our favourite piece of art is definitely the charming recreation of a beer-drinking octopus fondling the Sagrada Familia cathedral. We recommend running through the Brewdog staples – Dead Pony Pale Ale and Punk IPA – to get you started, and then the world (of 18 other taps) is your oyster.

Like the other BBC, but more beer and less Eastenders

The founders of Barcelona Beer Co. were carefully crafting original, boundary-pushing microbrews long before they were able to open up this brilliant taproom to sell them all in. Indeed, their own productions should absolutely be your first port of call at the long, terracotta-tiled bar. They serve four-glass samplers of different brews – perfect if you’re stuck for choice between the 16 taps.

A combination of large windows and a bright, illuminated sign above the bar mean that this modern space never feels dingy. It’s a perfect place to settle in for a long evening session, and if you want to return the next day because you like it so much, or you only got through half of the 16 taps – they are also famed for their bocatas (sandwiches). Try the ‘Albondigas’ for delicious meatballs or the ‘Conchinita Pibil’ for traditional Mexican slow-roasted pork.
