Since lockdown, we've all been forced to take part in at least one virtual quiz or gathering using one of the various new platforms that have emerged. There are so many to choose from for your virtual hen do, but our personal favourites are Zoom and Houseparty, which have been built with group gatherings in mind. Once you’ve decided on your app of choice, it’s time to get a date and time pinned down for your virtual hen do
Helpful tip: with many people off work and in lockdown, chances are you are going to have a much higher attendance number to your virtual hen do than you would “in real life”. This can pose a problem for noise distortion and people talking over one another, so it may be a good idea to consider staggering the times your attendees enter the party, in order to prevent clucking chaos.
Creating an itinerary doesn’t mean your hen party will be a military affair - unless that’s your theme of course. With the usual hen do, there’s always a natural order of events, from pub to pub, to restaurant to strippers – the Maid of Honour(s) usually have a rough order of how and when things will be taking place and a virtual hen party is no different. Having an itinerary to guide you through the evening will ease any awkwardness that comes with a virtual gathering and will ensure the evening flows. An itinerary is also a great way of letting your hens know of any accessories or items they will need for the celebration (although, it’s always nice to have a couple surprises up your sleeve!).
Helpful tip: Send itineraries out a couple days ahead so hens can make sure they are prepared with any accessories or items that they made need.
Drunken hens need a lot of guidance when navigating from bar to bar and restaurants to activities and a virtual hen party is no different. That’s why it’s a good idea for the Maid of Honour/ Chief Bridesmaid or anyone who likes to keep order to compere the evening and make sure that the timings flow in order to keep the evening running. This is an especially good idea if you have a virtual activity booked at a specific time.
Helpful tip: If your group of hens particularly enjoy a tipple, it may be best to host activities towards the beginning of the evening to avoid any drunken shenanigans.
Just because your hen do is online, doesn't mean you need to scrap any plans you had to have a themed celebration. There are loads of costume ideas available on our online store or dedicated hen night themes page. Or, if sitting in your living room dressed as a Baywatch babe seems a bit ridiculous to you, you can always get personalised t-shirts printed up for you and your girls – our personalised t-shirts section has loads of ideas, including tongue-in-cheek Coronavirus designs.
Helpful tip: Ensure you leave enough time for all your items to arrive as companies and delivery services still aren’t working to full capacity due to lockdown. Some items may take longer than others to arrive, so make sure you order in plenty of time to ensure all items are ready for your virtual hen do.
What's a last night of freedom without music? We’re sure it's illegal to throw a hen party without Beyoncé's Single Ladies being played at least once, so it's important to make sure that you and your girls get into the party spirit with a decent playlist. Make sure to ask the bride first, so all her favourite bangers are included, before opening the choices up to the hens. We recommend Spotify for music choices as their shared playlist options makes it easy to build a bank of tunes and invite your friends to listen.
Helpful tip: have a moderator check the playlist before getting the party started, just to make sure that Single Ladies hasn’t been put in 15 different times.
Arguably the most important part of any gathering is the food and drink. Let's admit it, we all miss examining the PDF menus of restaurants that we're going to eat at, so why should a virtual hen party be any different? Pre-agree with the hens on their takeaways of choice and all agree to order at the same time. This way, you can all enjoy your food together AND you have a menu to get excited about once more! We recommend places like Deliveroo and Domino's who are practicing social distancing and are providing contact-free deliveries.
Helpful tip: Get in touch with the groom-to-be, to see if he will act as the hen's ‘waiter for the evening’. It's a great way to treat the hen and add an extra element of fun to the evening.
Speaking of fun, hen night games are the name of the, well, game when it comes to a virtual hen party. Just because you're celebrating through a screen doesn't mean you can't still have drinking games, and thankfully all your classic favourites are virtual friendly including; How Well Do You Know the Bride? Saucy Charades and even Did You Ever? Would You Ever?
Helpful tip: Get creative and get the drinks flowing by making up some drinking rules that apply to lockdown. We’re talking, every time someone's family member walks past in the background, take a drink. Every time someone mentions a nice walk they went on – drink. For every person who has baked banana bread during lockdown, take a shot… you get the idea.
What's a hen party without a bit of naughtiness? Just because you're confined to your homes, doesn't mean you can't still enjoy all the offerings of a traditional hen. Many activity companies have adapted and taken their services online, meaning that cheeky strip show you were planning on treating the hen to can now be enjoyed from your sofa! If you're looking for something less risqué, we have put together a collection of virtual hen party activities, from flower crown workshops to Dirty Dancing Dance Classes (Patrick Swayze not included).
Helpful tip: We suggest kicking celebrations off with the flower crown workshops, so you and your hens can show off your handy work and add an extra element of fun to the party.
