This is one of Bucharest’s stand out cultural buildings. Palace of the Parliament was built under dictator Nicolae Ceausescu during a period of economic hardship. It was built to survive a seismic risk and even a nuclear attack, which explains the truly breath-taking architecture of the building. This place holds the Guinness World record for being for the largest administrative building (for civil use) – now that’s impressive! The building was built by a whopping 100,000 workers and used 1,000,000 cbm of marble and 550,000 tons of cement. Today it’s possible to take a tour around this magnificent building.
National Museum of Romanian History

This museum does what it says on the tin…. Tells you about the history of Romania. Located on Calea Victoriei, here you’ll discover Romanian historical artifacts from prehistoric times up to modern times. The Historical Treasurey has 3000+ special pieces including, objects of worship and jewellery that illustrate the history of the Romanian people. There are also manuscripts, historical photographs, pottery, maps, medals and more to be discovered here. As well as the permanent exhibitions, the museum offers lots of exciting temporary exhibitions. Note that you’re not allowed in with bulky luggage, so probably not one for your first or last day.

King Mihai I Park is a large park that can be found on the northern side of Bucharest. This magnificent park is spread over one hundred and eighty-seven hectares around the gorgeous Herastrau lake. With its quaint bridges and greenery, it really does look like something out of a picture book. There are loads of statues of famous historical figures such as Charles de Gaulle, Romania’s national poet Mihai Eminescu and William Shakespeare. There’s lots to do here such as catch a seasonal theatre performance, fish, rent bikes and go on a boat trip. If you want somewhere calm to stroll around, this park is perfect.

Even if you just look at it from the outside, The Romanian Athenaeum is pretty damn impressive. Nicknamed the Romanian temple of arts, this concert hall is formed from a peristyle of six columns. This unique building was classified as a historical monument in 2004. Scenes from Romanian history are featured on the walls inside the Big Hall on the first floor. As well as being architecturally stunning, this epic building has hosted a lot of important Romanian events. There are eight hundred seats seated in the round giving you a great view of the stage. "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum

This open-air museum, located in the King Michael I Park, showcases traditional Romanian village life. It opened in 1936 in the presence of King Charles II. Here you are free to wander around this reconstructed village. You can discover 123 authentic peasant settlements and 50,000+ Romanian artefacts. These peasant settlements range from the 17th to the 20th century. There are houses, mills, churches and other buildings to go and take a gander at. You can read about each of them on little placards. This immersive historical village was created by playwright Victor Ion Popa and set designer Henri H. Stahl.

Dubbed as one of Europe’s best natural history museums, the National Museum of Natural History has an incredible 2 million + objects to peruse. There’s a wide range of collections including geology, palaeontology, anatomy, and more. You will come face to face with enormous dinosaur skeletons that gives you great photo opportunities, as well as a wealth of animal and plant life that can be found in Romania. To make the experience more immersive and interesting, the stuffed animals have been placed in their natural habitat. There’s even a massive cave that measures 4.5meters wide and 11 meters long with plenty of critters to discover.

The second park to make our cultural list, this one is an English-style garden with fountains, monuments and a boating lake. Oh, and there’s an 19th-century Gambrinus Brewery onsite (aha! Now we’ve got your attention). This lush brewery serves local beer and Romanian food. This is Bucharest’s oldest park. There’s a rose garden, French garden and three lakes to explore. You can find this delightful park right in the middle of Bucharest making it a fab little escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. There’s lots of nature to observe too, like cute ducks, which is just the tonic when you’re severely hungover.

Found in Piata Unirii, which is one of the largest squares in central Bucharest, you might end up seeing this magical fountain show without really planning to. It is well worth the effort of seeking it out though. The Water Symphony is a free show that features sound, light and fountains. It takes place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays May through to September. This isn’t just a little sprinkler; this show is mega impressive. Often, they will use contemporary/popular music in the show. The show will run for approx forty-five minutes. Trust us you’re gonna want to take a video. Welcome to the Museum of Senses, where like in Alice’s wonderland, nothing is ever as it seems. This unique adventure will challenge your senses (the clue’s in the title!). Featuring mind-blowing optical illusions, you can expect water flowing upwards, rooms that seem to go on forever and chairs that look broken, but you can sit on. Taxi | There’s a taxi rank at the airport. Taxi is a convenient and reasonably priced way of making your way to the city centre. However, you do run the risk of running into a ‘pirate taxi’, which is where taxi drivers will try and charge tourists much more than usual. It’s good to agree the rate before you set off. To avoid this situation entirely we would recommend using Uber or Bolt apps for taxis. |
Train | There is a direct train from Bucharest Otopeni Airport to Bucharest Gara de Nord, which is the main train station in Bucharest. The journey will take around about twenty-five minutes. |
Bus | The number 783 bus runs between Bucharest Otopeni Airport and the city centre. The bus passes through the Old Town area. You can buy a ticket from a machine or use contactless. |
You’re spoilt for choice of how to get around Bucharest. This fab city has both a tram network AND a metro network. Of course you can always walk, hop on a bus, or take a taxi.
