Also known as District 7 (Jennifer Lawrence not included), Budapest’s hipster Jewish Quarter is where you’ll spend the majority of your stag do. Filled with new age ruin bars, this district is seriously popular with visitors who want to sample a slice of true Hungarian nightlife.

No matter whether you’re after a wild night out or just a few day drinks keeping you topped up between activities, the Jewish Quarter’s ruin bars have everything you could wish for on your stag do. The quirky ruin bars on offer in this district occupy formerly dilapidated buildings, squares and courtyards, and will sweep you up in a misty haze of outdoor drinking, eccentric upcycled seating and wallet pleasing prices.

The Jewish Quarter’s streets are lined with back to back ruin bars. Previously dilapidated, these buildings, squares and courtyards have been revamped into cool, edgy bars. We’ll see you there.

As far as ruin bars go, this one is szimply the best (and not only because we can make that joke every time we talk about it), it really is the ‘Mecca’ of all ruin bars. This huge, former factory has been transformed into an open air cinema, live music venue, theatre events space and massive bar. There’s unusual bric-a-brac lining the walls and ceilings, and those sawn-off Trabant seats are worth writing home about.

Interiors of Fogas Haz, with circus themed decor

Recently fully refurbished, this psychedelic Wonderland is back and it’s better than ever. The huge party space is a mash up of four ruin bars which have amalgamated to form the city’s largest ruin bar complex. The merge offers brand new musical projects, longer opening hours and several surprises along the way. Picking up a stronger following as time goes on, the Fogas Haz complex is one of the liveliest nightlife destinations in Europe.

Lots of people partying inside Doboz

With over 3,000 visitors per day, Doboz is obviously doing something right. Seamlessly blending pub, club and cultural hub, this labyrinth of rooms boasts eight music styles, a grill bar and two dancefloors. In classic ruin bar style, Doboz has its fair share of greenery to offer – including the oldest tree in the district (at 300 years old) in its courtyard. There’s even a huge metal gorilla climbing the trees branches – you can’t miss it.

A view of the interiors of Mazel Tov with fairy lights and ivy on the walls

A roof made entirely of glass and a floor of white pebbles make this one of the brightest ruin bars in the district. Nestled right in the centre of the Jewish Quarter, the aptly named Mazel Tov is an Aladdin’s cave – deceptively small and deserted looking from the outside, but huge once you cross its red tape. Unfurling like a mystical maze, this urban, recreational cultural space is a casual spot where you can grab a bite to eat or top up on your speciality beer. It even hosts the annual Jewish Summer Festival in May.

A bird's eye view of Liebling at Christmas time

Located slap bang in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, Liebling (literally translating as ‘darling’) kicks off the block of party venues on Akacfa Street. This neat rooftop ruin bar encapsulates everything hipster, with fairy lighting, sculptures, quirky wooden walls, indoor plants, live music and craft beer. Widely known as sister ruin bar, Fogas Haz’s ‘warm up bar’, it’s a cracking place to have a couple of pre drinks and soak up that unique Hungarian nightlife scene.

All the perks of a rowdy stag do bar, but you won’t miss out on the live sport either. Cheers to that. As with any good sports bar, there’s pool and billiard tables, dart boards and table football to keep you and the lads occupied at half time. Plus, a beer is going to cost you around a quid, so you can’t really go wrong.

Did you hear oxygen went on a date with potassium? It went OK. Refreshingly different, Bar Pharma combines a dash of science with litres of alcohol – and we love the results. In a district where beers and froccs are seriously popular, this cocktail bar is a welcome addition to the Jewish Quarter. Showcasing specialist shots in medicine bottles and periodic tables lining the walls, the bar takes on a playful side of drinking, offering state-of-the-art drinks with a chemical twist.

One of the bar areas in Legenda Sorfozde Pub, with eight pumps and their logos up on the walls

With live rock music, its own brewery and enough craft beer to sink a battleship, it’s no wonder this one’s named ‘Legend’s Pub’. Apart from being the ultimate hub for craft beer and real ale, you can also try Game Over Bourbon Ale here. Coming in at a whopping 12%, down too many bourbon ales and you won’t remember your stag do - but you will be a legend - swings and roundabouts…
