Stag Nightlife Guide to the Diamond Strip
Top Reasons to Visit the Diamond Strip |
---|
 | Bars - Home to the most exclusive bars in the entire city, with many seeing big celebs in their time. |
 | Restaurants - It's a street dedicated to drinking but you can get seriously tasty food too. |
 | Music - Big on national and international DJs - think Tomorrowland, but smaller and in Newcastle. |
 | Shopping - If your list consists of magnums of Ace of Spades - you're in the right place. |
 | Art - There's a fine art to going out without a coat in the baltic North East - this is where you'll see it! |
The ‘strip’ is renowned for exclusive bars and clubs, as well as a famous guestlist. For those that watch Geordie Shore, and read the Daily Mail sidebar, you’ll know this street like the back of your hand. It’s the backdrop to most of the scenes, and is so decadent – there’s even a giant Buddha statue in one of the bar windows.
You can get entry to quite a few of these bars with our epic Newcastle Nightlife Wristband that gets you into 10+ great bars and clubs around Newcastle.
The crowd is, typically, young and beautiful (you’ll fit right in). We may joke about Geordie lasses wearing nee coats, but this is where it comes into play. It’s one of the, if not the, busiest nightlife districts, with most natives coming to celeb spot on a weekend. This place is also the most stylish, and nothing less than your smartest chinos and polo will do, pet.
You want classy, Geordie girls and celebs - you've got it. The Diamond Strip is Newcastle's famous son; a swanky street that boasts the biggest and best clubs. You'll need your smartest shoes to get past the velvet rope.

One word: vodka. The original home of the spirit that sends you home early is at the very start of the Diamond Strip. Set in a former bank conversion, with original marble pillars and columns, it’s one of those bars you begin the night’s good intentions with (before ending it in a takeaway on the Bigg Market). But, back to the vodka – they range in flavours from Birthday Cake, to Das Bomb and XXX Chilli. Good luck.

05. Cosy Joes
Visit Website31 Groat Market, NE1 1UQ

Cosy Joes is a North East institution. If you’ve not drunkenly sang karaoke at Cosy Joes, you’ve not done Newcastle properly! Featuring a fully equipped suite of karaoke rooms, this is the no 1 spot to thoroughly embarrass yourself as you scream Sweet Caroline into the mic. The private rooms can take between 4 and 25 singers. There are large flatscreen TVs and you can order drinks at the touch of a button. If you feel that your singing needs an audience (we understand you’re destined for fame) then you can head to the karaoke stage. There’s a main bar you can drink at too with the resident DJ who keeps the fun going into the early hours.

Get those retro flares ready for a stag do at Flares. If you want cheese, cheap drinks and a colourful light-up dance floor – Flares is your man. The bar, that could be considered on the Diamond Strip and Bigg Market, screams old-school, featuring 70s wallpaper, a club hung with glitter balls and an old-fashioned car dangling above the floor. Those feel good tunes are a shining beacon for hen groups (and stag groups alike), all brought to you by the notorious DJ Lorenzo and Mr Allen. You’ll be on first name terms come the end of the weekend…

08. Swarley’s
Visit Website11 Groat Market, NE1 1JE

Now for a bit of history and culture…. Swaley’s was opened in 1894, making it one of the toon’s oldest boozers. This place features traditional décor, including a quaint cobblestone floor, vintage lights and a wood bar with an ornate brass rail. There’s a free jukebox so you can whack on a tune you fancy without speaking to a DJ. This is a cracking place for a refreshing pint, plus you can say you did something cultural whilst you were in Newcastle (sort of).

09. The Prince
Visit Website8 Pudding Chare, NE1 1UE

Skiing probably isn’t what you think of when you think of Newcastle, however The Prince brings après-ski vibes to the toon. Featuring authentic Alpine décor, including wooden panelling and stone fireplaces, this all-day boozer is the go-to place for live music and live sports. It’s even got a little karaoke den hidden away in the back. You can get shot skis here, which just means shots served in a ski. This might not be an actual ski chalet but have enough shots and we bet you won’t be able to tell the difference.

10. Mimo
Visit Website8 Pudding Chare, NE1 1UE

Mimo is Newcastle’s resident Miami-style Tiki bar and rum-tropolis. Basically, there’s enough rum to keep you merry for two years, let alone two nights. And, whilst we appreciate you’re too manly for cocktails – they are 2-4-1 and you can get the infamous Zombie. Twice. You’ve also got a terrace, inspired by Miami’s golden beaches, to soak up the rays the north east is famous for.

Cash, Cabs and Kebabs
Cash Machines
The Diamond Strip doesn’t do cash machines (it’s posh after all), but there are ones near the train station and in the Bigg Market. You won’t have far to walk for the stag do wallet.
Taxis
That’s your cash sorted, and your cabs are just as easy; a taxi rank is stationed just outside The Social Club. Central Station is also up the road, should you need a cab from there. The adjoining road to Bigg Market also has its own taxi rank, or you could even walk further up the notorious strip for another load of taxis.
Takeaways
As you’d expect in a street that attracts the likes of Geordie Shore – there’s not much room for takeaways. This is a classy district. However (top tip), around the corner from the Diamond Strip – St Nicholas' St – there is a fantastic pizza shop, where you can even buy by the slice. And, as an additional bonus, Subway is just next door. Neighbouring Bigg Market, a couple of minutes’ stumble, is also packed full of takeaways – including a couple of burger vans.
Now the Diamond Strip has won you over, we can only assume you are wholly prepared for your big weekend. As luck would have it, you can build your own stag do on our Newcastle stag weekends page.
*We know all there is to know about the Diamond Strip, and all info on the zone was correct at the time of publication. Probably.
