The long ‘strip’ of bars is a sophisticated option for your stag do – especially if you’re a real ale lover. Grey Street is brimming with wine bars and quirky venues, attracting all manner of locals. Due to its location, it's a cultural melting pot of tourists, with bars interspersed with restaurants and cool shops. This district also has several streets connecting it to the legendary Bigg Market, and is a fantastic start to an altogether different ending. This nightlife zone will see you sinking beer in a nice bar, and the Bigg Market will have you on the trebles whilst dancing on a bench at the Bierkeller…

Walking (stumbling) down Grey Street, you’ll get to Dean Street – the M.A.N of Newcastle’s nightlife zones. The venues range from those dedicated to hops, to all-out fancy bars and traditional pubs – it’s one of those places you can even bring your Father-in-Law. Dean Street is also home to one of the most luxurious clubs in the city, a regular for wor Cheryl Cole.

There's no other district in Newcastle quite like these famous brothers - packed full of the city's largest concentration of pubs, alongside bars and even the odd club.

That bar? No, dAt Bar… The eclectic dAt Bar is what Grey Street was built on. That, and iconic monuments… Whilst this venue may cause confusion when asking for directions, once you are there – you’re in it for the long haul. The hipster-style bar/bistro is stripped back and urban, with the staff as quirky as the interior. It also has 20 ever-changing beer taps on rotation, rubbing shoulders with an epic 74 hour sourdough pizza menu and burgers dry-aged in a Himalayan salt chamber. dAt Bar doesn’t do things by halves.

The exterior of Harry's Bar

Straight opposite the world-famous Theatre Royal, and with a separate entrance on Market Street, Harry’s is a dominant force in this nightlife zone. Past the huge seating area and into the spacious bar, it’s a far cry from any boozers you’ll have come across before. The modern venue features an American-style bar in the centre, and a more mature crowd than the Bigg Market. However, that doesn’t mean it’s any less loud than the district, drawing in huge numbers each weekend for the top scran, and even better drinks.

07. The Charles Grey

118 Grey St, NE1 6JG

The interior of The Charles Grey

Newcastle has got its own Mr Grey, and he’s thought of as a hero in these parts. The Toon’s world-famous creator of Earl Grey (you’re welcome), Charles, is honoured in Newcastle, with his very own monument – the actual Monument. Signalling the start of the popular Grey Street bar crawl, The Charles Grey is a comfy and cosy pub. Expect loads of beer, bottles, real ale, proper pub grub and a seriously large crowd. Whilst it may be overlooked by Newcastle’s biggest celebrity, this pub boasts an even better attraction – outdoor seating. Centred around the Monument, the pub’s tables and chairs are packed with only the slightest hint of sun. It’s a day drinker’s paradise.

09. Glass House

Milburn House, Dean St, NE1 1LF

The interior of Glass House

Glass House is another impressive venue, steeped in 20s style history and hen groups to boot. Set in the impressive Milburn House, the James Bond of the ‘strip’, the inside is just as grand as the outside. This is where you artfully lean against the bar with a brandy and attempt to seduce those hens in fairy wings and L-Plates. Speaking of drinks, they are based on the prohibition (…), with an extensive whiskey list to impress your Dad-in-Law. We told you that to take him here… Should you want to give him more reason to like you, there’s an outdoor cigar terrace – as extravagant as you would expect – where you can opt for a cigar to pair with your liquid nectar.

The interior of Babucho

In the same vein, Babucho is sleek and stylish – a monochrome venue that has outdoor seating, delicious grub to prepare for a night in The Toon and drinks by the bucket load (literally). This American beauty is located near the waterfront, dedicated to food and drink inspired by the Big Apple. During the day, it’s one of those venues you soak up all the previous night’s booze, before it transforms into an adult playground after dark. It’s also directly opposite Livello, for those looking to experience that famous Geordie stag weekend. Whey aye.

Cash, Cabs and Kebabs

Cash Machines

As the main shopping strip, this nightlife zone has the biggest concentration of cash machines out of all the others. You’ve got a huge HSBC, directly at Monument, to dip into the stag do purse, as well as various banks running down the ‘strip’. And, you won't be charged to withdraw.

Taxis

Grey Street is often thought of as the ‘centre of Newcastle’. The Monument is the unofficial meeting point for most locals, tourists and anyone else who fancies a weekend in The Toon. The nightlife district boasts High Bridge Street, connecting these lads to the even louder Bigg Market, and you’re only eight minutes from the Diamond Strip. If you continue walking down towards Dean Street, you’ll also eventually meet the Quayside. As you’re in the thick of the action – taxis are, pretty much, unnecessary, but you’ve got the city’s most popular rank just on the side of Monument.

Takeaways

Similar to the Quayside, Grey and Dean Street are chock full of restaurants, but you’ve got the likes of Greggs (there’s a running theme…), and a top takeaway in the middle of Dean Street. However, if you join High Bridge Street - connecting Grey to the Bigg Market - there’s a cracking burger van calling your name.

Your stag do is only just beginning, and you can build the rest of it over on our Newcastle stag weekends page.
