Budapest's Best

BUILD YOUR budapest STAG

Budapest is undergoing a craft beer revolution. Become part of it on your stag do.

With, quite literally, hundreds of hipster haunts to choose from, craft beer and real ale lovers are in the right place. And, the best part is that your average £3.10 U.K. pint will cost you less than a quid in most Budapest bars. Viva la revolution.

Let's get started.

1. Lehuto

Holló u. 12-14, Budapest, 1076

Slowly but surely, Lehuto is becoming a stag do staple in Budapest.

The hip cellar bar serves only the highest quality drinks, including a top notch craft beer selection. With six taps dedicated to an ever-changing selection of Hungarian craft beers and a 30-strong bottled beer range including stouts, IPA and wheat beers – as far as hipster beer haunts go, this one’s up there with the best. We recommend trying Fekete Erdo (translating as Black Forest), with its forest fruit and four types of malt or Vorosbegy (translating as Red Robin), a creamy caramel malt brew.

2. Marionett Craft Beer Bar

Vigadó tér 1, Budapest, 1051

Tricky to find, but well worth the search – this characterful bar is a must for a more elegant craft beer experience.

Attached to the Mariott Hotel on the Daunbe Promenade, this rustic bar boasts some of the best beers and lagers in the whole city – including plum lager, fruit beers and IPA. Owned by the same folk as the Jonas Craft Beer House, this unlikely location for a craft beer bar is part of its charm. Prices are also incredibly reasonable, and there are a wide variety of different strengths of beers – from 4.1% to a heavy 8.1%.

3. Jonas Craft Beer House

Fovám tér 11, , Budapest, 1093

Just by Liberty Bridge, the impressive whale-like glass and metal building is a Budapest landmark in itself.

Having laid empty for several years, it recently opened its doors as a brand new craft beer bar named Jonas. During summer months, its waterside terrace is one of the hottest spots in the city to grab a beer and take in the views. Jonas’ owner, Zoli Reketye-Trifan, has his own award-winning microbrewery just outside of the city, where a lot of the beer house’s supplies come from. It’s worth trying their flavour-of-the-day ‘Monkey Funky Yeah’, a hazy amber sour wheat beer brewed by Hara’Punk.

4. Csak a Jo Sor

Kertész u. 42, Budapest, 1073

The interior of Bier Keller, Newcastle, with wooden benches and seats

Translating as ‘Only Good Beer’, this one does exactly what it says on the tin.

Totally informal and super comfortable, this cosy bar is much like having a few chilled world beers in your best mate’s front room. Despite being a true pioneer of the local beer revolution, the owner also stocks ales from all across the globe. His latest creation is a creamy 8.8% foreign stout with added cane sugar, Deep Throat. Note: this one closes earlier than most bars in Budapest, so we’d recommend coming here for a few pre-drinks before a big night out.

5. Skanzen Club

The interior of Bier Keller, Newcastle, with wooden benches and seats

With no bar staff and very few rules, Skanzen Club is a real home from home.

Operating a pour your own pint policy, visitors can fill their own glasses and pay in a donations box on the wall. Not officially classed as a pub or bar, Skanzen on Koztelek Street is located within a private apartment building – and therefore does not have to follow the laws which would otherwise apply to its counterparts. Extremely popular with smokers, this pub allows people to smoke indoors, all to a cosy backdrop of poster-lined walls, Hungarian brewed beers and friendly folk.
