Newcastle's Best

Us Geordies love a good old pub crawl, especially when it’s in our neck of the woods.

The Toon is pretty darn special when it comes to beer and real ale (if we do say so ourselves), so let us guide you through a magical journey around all of the local watering holes that are excellent haunts for those of us partial to a pint or ten.

Let's get started.

1. The Bridge Tavern

7 Akenside Hill, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 3UF

The interior of Bier Keller, Newcastle, with wooden benches and seats

What better place to begin our pub crawl in the Toon, than right under our very finest and most iconic landmark, the Tyne Bridge?

The award winning Bridge Tavern has an extremely quaint, chilled out and atmospheric ambiance, with a fantastic rooftop terrace to spill out onto on a warm evening. The tavern is even host to an impressive, fully operational, two hectolitre micro-brewery, which is well worth a look at.

As well as selling ten cask pumps from UK-wide breweries, keg beers and bottled world beers, the in house brewer creates batches of cask and keg ale daily which you can sample and buy. Locally sourced, seasonal food is available; from bar snacks, light bites, leisurely lunches, evening meals and Sunday roasts.

2. Crown Posada

31 Side, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear , NE1 3JE

Our next stop is the multi award winning Crown Posada; an old school, traditional pub, and a firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike.

This is the second oldest pub in Newcastle and a grade II listed building with highly traditional pub interiors. It boasts fantastic stained glass windows, awesome dark wood panelling, traditional wall lamps and a fully functioning house gramophone, making for a great place for you and the lads to have some real chill out time.

Ales are sourced from local suppliers around the North East, and if you need any help with choosing your tipple, the staff are always ready and willing to help you out.

3. Brew Dog

16 Dean St, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 1PG

Next up is Newcastle’s resident hipster haunt Brew Dog, situated between the city’s historic Grainger Town and the picturesque Quayside.

These lot are rebels, battling a continuous fight against stuffy, faceless, industrially brewed lagers and beers. Their bar, on Newcastle’s Dean Street, is a library of modern-day, beery masterpieces from the likes of BrewDog, Mikkeller, Evil Twin, Alesmith, Victory and many more.

This hipster bar boasts thirty-three craft beer taps, ranging from their flagship Punk IPA to the limited edition small batch wonders, as well as hundreds of bottled beers to choose from. Complete with chic, graffitied interiors, artistic events, regular live music and an awesome vintage pinball table, this one’s sure to be a cracking stop off on your crawl.

Drunk Stage 3

4. Bierrex

82 Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 6JN

So we’ve reached our fourth stop, feeling a wee bit tipsy yet?

Bierrex is a true hidden gem in the city. If you like your experimental beers, this ones the place for you. Bierrex boasts 31 custom-made numbered taps which deliver ever-changing craft beer from both keg and cask. This awesome little venue, with entirely bespoke interiors, even comes complete with outdoor terrace, where you can spill out onto the street with your chosen beverages.

And, unlike anything Newcastle has seen before, this smoke and tap house puts a European spin on Southern American BBQ within their extensive menu - making this one a great place for a true woodsmoke experience.

Drunk Stage 4

5. dAt bAr

11 Market Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, NE1 6JN

The interior of Bier Keller, Newcastle, with wooden benches and seats

Our last stop on this epic bar crawl is the independent and exciting dAt bAr on Market Street.

Another one for the experimental beer lovers out there. Excitingly, this bar features 20 ever-changing beer taps, so you can find something different each time you visit, including an exclusive dAt bAr Saison beer in collaboration with Anarchy Brew Co.

The interiors are reminiscent of a vintage American diner, integrated into the hipster mainstream and are sure to bring out your inner beer swilling rodeo. dAt bAr also offers an extensive menu, including a wide selection of pizzas, burgers, salads, steaks, and small plates.
